Healing Through Sound

Sound healing or sound therapy is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been in existence since time immemorial. It utilises specific frequencies, tones, and vibrations to balance and restore the body's natural equilibrium to hopefully restore one’s well-being. By immersing the body in specific resonant sounds, it is believed that it can trigger deep states of relaxation, relieve stress, and support your physical and mental well-being.

How Does Sound Healing Work?

Sound affects the entire body at both a physical and neurological level:

• Brainwave Entrainment: Listening to specific frequencies (such as binaural beats) can alter electrical activities in the brain. This can help shift your brainwaves from an active, stressed state (Beta) into a deeply relaxed state (Alpha, Theta, and Delta).

• Nervous System Regulation: When correctly used, deep vibrations can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which acts as the body's "rest and digest" switch, to decrease stress hormones like cortisol while boosting mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

• Vibrational Healing: Sound is physical vibration. Low-frequency vibrations from instruments have been proven to stimulate touch fibers in the body to increase blood circulation, relieve muscle stiffness, and alter pain perception.

Common Instruments and Modalities

• Sound Baths: These are sessions where the participants lie down and bathe in the ambient vibrations of chimes, gongs and bowls.

• Tibetan Singing Bowls: These are especially useful for generating complex, harmonic tones that can help to ground the mind and harmonize your energy centers.

• Crystal Singing Bowls: As these are made from natural quartz materials, they emit natural, pure, sustained, highly resonant tones which target specific energy nodes (chakras) in the body.

• Tuning Forks: These are applied directly to specific points on your body or joints to release tension and encourage cellular healing of your body through sound vibrations.

Documented Health Benefits of Sound Healing

• Reduces Anxiety and Depression: Sound healing helps to quiet down your racing thoughts and also significantly lower tension.

• Improves Sleep Quality: Sound healing helps transition your brain from a stressful state to a deep, restorative sleep state.

• Pain Management: Studies on negative health conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis have shown that low-frequency sound stimulation can reduce inflammation and minimize reliance on pain medication for you.

• Lowers Blood Pressure: The calming effect through sound healing on the vagus nerve can help to lower your blood pressure and regulate your heart rate.
